Gift-publishing Exchange 2005
In the tradition of the subpress self-publish or perish initiative, gift-publishing participants gave the gift of some of their brand new work to others who agreed to do the same. Twenty writers and artists signed on. Click on the names below to see the works of nineteen of us.
Here are some more thoughts on gift-publishing:
1. we are all working on some project most of the time anyway so why not give some work away, work that might not otherwise see too many readers
2. gift-publishing requires no marketing--it will work if three or thirty want to participate
3. with gift-publishing, value is not related to scarcity--anyone willing can participate
4. the process of putting something together for a gift can lead to deeper revision--a deadline is a great motivator to make decisions
5. gift-publishing encourages generous readings and can foster feedback, especially if the participant requests some
